If you’ve looked through the site and are thinking that you might not be able to work with me, but do need further support, this page will give you a list of places that may be able to assist you. This is not an exhaustive list, but can provide you with places to start. The information is focused around Leeds, though some organisations are also national, and was correct at the time of being updated.
Mental Health Crisis
Places to call:
- Connect helpline is a survivor-led service offering emotional support to people in Leeds. Open every night 6pm to 2am. Call 0808 800 1212 (free phone).
- Connect BSL helpline is on Mondays at 7pm to 11pm, facetime/skype/glide with BSL trained staff. Call 07500 870 987.
- West Yorkshire 24 hour mental health helpline offers support, advice and information for anyone in Leeds. Open 24/7. Call 0800 183 0558 (free phone).
- Samaritans is always open to talk about whatever you’re going through. Open 24/7. Call 116 123 (free phone).
- Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Single Point of Access (SPA) accepts referrals for anyone needing urgent care or treatment for a mental health crisis. Open 24/7. Call 0800 183 1485 (if you’re deaf or have hearing loss, text 07983 323867).
- NHS 111 (freephone) is open 24/7 if you have a problem with your physical or mental health and you’re not sure what to do. They also have a BSL option.
- Childline is there to help anyone under 19 in the UK with any issue they’re going through. Young people can talk about anything big or small and the trained counsellors are there to give support. Childline is free, confidential and available any time, day or night by calling 0800 1111. BSL support is also available
Face to Face Help:
- GP emergency appointment – ask to talk to the 1st available GP. GPs see many people every week who are worried about their mental health.
- Well-Bean ‘Hope in a Crisis’ Cafe offers a safe and confidential space for people (16+) experiencing crisis in Leeds. Open 7 nights a week, 6pm to 12am. Face-to-face support and by phone. Call or text 1st on 07760 173 476 if you want to access the Cafe.
- Dial House is a place of sanctuary offering emotional and practical support to people (16+) in crisis. Open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6pm to 2am. Face-to-face support, phone and video chat. Call 0113 260 9328 or text 07922 249 452.
- Dial House@Touchstone offers support to people from Black and Minority Ethnic groups (16+). Support by phone. Open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm to 12am. Call 0113 249 4675 or text 07763 581 853.
Support by Text or Online Chat:
- Connect online is a local survivor-led online chat service for people in distress. Open every night 6pm to 2am via website homepage: www.lslcs.org.uk
- Shout text service struggling to cope? Text SHOUT to 85258 (free) any time 24/7 for support. Messages are anonymous and won’t appear on your phone bill.
- Email the Samaritans – sometimes writing down your thoughts can help. Email Jo@samaritans.org. Response time is 24 hours.
- Signhealth Crisis Text Service for Deaf people Text DEAF to 85258 (free). Messages are anonymous and won’t appear on your phone bill.
- NHS111 talk online if you have a medical problem and you’re not sure what to do: visit www.111.nhs.uk
- Childline has a chat function where you can speak to a counsellor and also has an email function but you do need to register with Childline first.
Specialist Services
- Cruse Bereavement Care helps people through one of the most painful times in life – with bereavement support, information and campaigning. You can call their helpline on 0808 808 1677, and find the helpline opening times here. They also have an online chat function, CruseChat and an online form specific to Cruse Leeds.
- Leeds Suicide Bereavement Service (LSBS) has been set up as a result of a partnership between Leeds Mind and Leeds Survivor Led Crisis Service. For anyone outside of Leeds, Leeds Mind also have their sister service, West Yorkshire Suicide Bereavement Service, covering Bradford, Craven, Kirklees, Huddersfield, Calderdale and Wakefield. Both services can be contacted via email SBS@leedsmind.org.uk or call 0113 3055800
- Leeds Domestic Violence Service (LDVS) supports all people in Leeds affected by domestic violence and abuse. If you are in immediate danger, please call the police on 999. If you are not in immediate danger but would like help and advice now, you can call the 24 hour helpline on 0113 246 0401 or email at hello@ldvs.uk
- SARSVL – SARSVL is the dedicated Rape Crisis Centre for all women and girls in Leeds affected by rape and sexual violence. To get in touch call 0808 802 3344 (freephone). Mondays 12-2pm, Tuesdays 8-10pm, Wednesdays 6-8pm, Thursdays 2-4pm, Sundays 6.30-8.30pm. You can also email support [at] sarsvl.org.uk or text 07860022880. If you are 16 and over, you can also contact the Rape Crisis England & Wales national online chat
- Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline provides a one-stop listening service for LGBT+ people on the phone (0300 330 0630, 10:00-22:00 every day) and through Instant Messaging.
- Night Owls is a confidential support line for children, young people, their parents and carers who live in Bradford, Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. Call 0800 148 8244 or text 07984 392 700)
- The Marketplace is a support service is for young people in Leeds aged 11 – 25. Marketplace provides a safe space for young people to talk about how they are feeling and as well as information about other services that can also help, however the young person must either live or study in Leeds to use the services. Telephone calls or face-to-face sessions can be arranged through their website
- Mindmate is here to help young people in Leeds find help with their mental health and wellbeing. Their website is an information hub for Leeds, and includes free and accredited services available in the city, advice and information on a range of mental health issues and guidance for self-care and where necessary, self-referral. While MindMate is focused on the needs of young people, it’s also a valuable resource for professionals, as well as parents and carers.
Other Support
- Citizen’s Advice give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find their way forward – whoever they are, and whatever their problem. The national charity and network of local charities offer confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, for free. They can be contacted through the various options on their website
- Andy’s Man Club are a men’s suicide prevention charity, aiming to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and create a judgment-free, confidential space where men can be open about the storms in their lives. They aim to achieve this through weekly, free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups for men aged over 18 across the United Kingdom and online.
- Forward Leeds provides support for adults, young people and families needing help with alcohol and drug use in Leeds. We have three main centres across Leeds as well and 5 WAYS for those in recovery.
- Leeds Housing Options is a service from Leeds City Council where if you’re homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, they may be able to help, and also provides advice for those at risk. You can call them on 0113 222 4412, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4:30pm, except Tuesdays when they are open from 10am, however there is also an emergency out of hours number you can call on 0113 378 8366.
- Money Buddies are there to help you save money, increase your income and advise you at times of financial crisis. Whether you’re having difficulty paying any debt, need legal debt advice or if you are not sure of what to do about your finances, Money Buddies offer many services including free debt advice in Leeds.
- GamCare is part of the National Gambling Treatment Service, a network of organisations working together providing confidential treatment and support for anyone experiencing gambling-related harms, free to access across England Scotland and Wales by telephone or live chat.
- Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) helps people who are concerned about their alcohol use and want to stop drinking. Call the National helpline on 0800 917 7650 (freephone) to be put in touch with someone locally. The Leeds Helpline can be contacted on 0113 245 4567 (local rates). You can also chat online from their website homepage.
